Matthew had an allergist appointment with Dr. Varshney on Wednesday. Have you heard how much we love her? L-O-V-E her!!!! She's amazing - she makes us feel like Matthew is her #1 patient, and she is working with doctors around the country to make sure Matthew is getting the care he needs. She is such a blessing!
The appointment was scheduled when we thought that Matthew had reacted to broccoli. Dr. Varshey consulted with her colleagues at Mt. Sinai and Matthew would have been the first case they'd ever seen of a reaction to broccoli, so she wanted us to come in. In the week that we waited to get in, Matthew had two more reactions, both after eating safe foods. We realized he was probably reacting to something in my milk when he had a reaction after eating nothing at all. And it was two hours exactly after nursing off of me. What did I have? Whataburger. Just a burger, fries, and a milkshake...the first fast food I've had in a month. This got us to thinking...what if his broccoli reaction wasn't to broccoli? We wanted to make sure before the appointment, so we trialed broccoli again on Monday, and sure enough, no reaction.
We decided to keep the appointment...all of the random reactions just had me worried. Turns out it has Dr. Varshney worried too. The multiple vomiting episodes have her concerned enough to mention taking him off my milk if we can't get it under control. Matthew hasn't been gaining weight like he's supposed to - he's dropped from the 90th percentile for weight at 8 months old to the 80th percentile at 9 months. He hasn't lost, but he really hasn't gained either. And when she took a look at the poopy diaper he conveniently made for her in the waiting room, Dr. Varshney saw mucus, and commented on the odd smell. She also reviewed the logs - the poop log, my food log, Matthew's reaction log (I'm SO tired of logging EVERYTHING!). She's certain he has FPIES to rice and peas, but she's concerned that something else may be wrong too.
Dr. Varshney is not positive that he's reacting to my milk, it's not impossible but it is rare, so she wants to make sure nothing else is going on. She ordered bloodwork, and stool samples. We also did a prick test to confirm that Matthew does not have an IgE Allergy to peas or rice. He also has an upper GI imaging scheduled on Tuesday the 27th to rule out any reflux issues. All of the testing is just to make sure we're not missing anything, that we're doing the best we can for Matthew. Oh, and I have a new log to keep, the bottle log - when he takes them and when the milk was produced...yay ;)
